My work promotes Deaf Awareness, which covers areas such as lip-reading and the use of sign language.

Video Project

Story board of 'How Well Can you Lipread'
"How Well Can You Lipread?"

When most people discoverer that I'm deaf, they ask me if I can lip-read. As soon as I reply "yes" but they interrupt and they just natter away thinking I am getting every single word they say, when in fact I'm struggling to understand. The fact is that some lip patterns are very similar to each other and everyone's individual lip patterns are different. Moving about when talking, covering your mouth, mumbling or talking too fast, also affects clarity.

My video project address these aspects of communication problems, making the viewer become in the position of being deaf and experiencing what it is like to try and lip-read a group of hearing people having a conversation. The sound is distorted like analogue hearing aids that amplify all noise making it almost impossible to focus on any one sound. I'm not only giving a realistic experience of deafness but also I'm hoping to encourage people to try to lip-read. The sound is a simulation of what it is like for me to listen through a hearing aid. so please bear in mind that the actual sound quality would vary depending on the hearing aid users individual hearing loss.

"Vee (Fantastic)" "British Sign Language (BSL)"

I wanted to capture movement from sign language as I think it could tell a story or history of what is being signed. I'm intrigued that I don't need words to make my photography "readable" and have like a secret language, especially for people who don't know sign language.
